Boogie Boards

Do you have students use personal whiteboards in class? Do you find it annoying and frustrating that markers are always lost or the  I just came across this LCD tool that could change the way we teach and enhance the way students learn. Solution: Boogie Boards. With a specialized pen that allows students to both write and draw with ease, students can learn with stumbling blocks.

GNARLY Quadratic Formula Song

(download)

Oh happy days! I came across this awesome song that was created by Timothy McCaffrey. It's so original and fresh that a teacher creates their own song to enhance the learning in their classroom. What an exciting way for students to see their actual teacher take the time to express excitement about a topic/subject. The teacher's excitement will spill over into the students excitement!!
I suggest that every teacher be innovative with these fresh ideas. I know that not everyone is musically inclined, but there are other ways to have students receive information in "cool" ways that gets them excited. How about poems? Poems are a great and catchy way to boost the interest of students and to actively help them learn various math formulas.

Great job Tim!!!

APLE program

Hi everyone! I applied for this program over a year ago and I was finally accepted. I'm thrilled, but, ironically not sure why I am. I'm in the process of contacting the information office about exact details of whether or not they are a job finder. Definitely, check out this site full of APLE information. Oh yes, let me briefly explain what APLE is. APLE stands for Assumption Program of Loans for Education. It's a program that takes newly credentialed teachers and places them in low income/Title 1 schools that are in the lowest 20th percentile of the API.
Check it out and see if you or someone you know can benefit by signing up for this program. It's a benefit for the teacher in that you can receive up to $19,000 in tuition reimbursement and you get an opportunity to work with students who really need quality teachers with fresh and innovative ideas. "APLE participants who agree to, and provide, the designated teaching service in the area of math, science, or education specialist instruction are eligible to receive an additional $1,000 per year in loan assumption benefits."

VIDEO GAMES in the classroom

I love video games as much as the next person. Well, let me retract that statement because I have seen how the love and intensity of video games have evolved within this past few decades. As a little Lauren, I was a big fan of the Nintendo, Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 during the 80s and 90s. Today's youth has so much more great options for games on various game consoles. With computers and the use of Internet, kids can even play some pretty awesome games online.
This is where we, as educators, come in. We can take the youth's love and dare I say it, addiction for video games and engage students to educational learning games. Here's an idea, why not have a Wii or PlayStation 3 in the classroom for students to use as a learning center? Students can spend time playing games focused on Math, English Language Arts or other subjects. This is a great way for various learners to practice new skills and concepts. Imagine the possibilities!!!
If you're not for having game consoles in the classroom, at the very least, encourage parents to purchase these educational learning games for their child to play and practice skills and concepts at home. Who says learning only has to be done in the classroom?

Here are some great sites that I have discovered which include educational games for various game consoles:

^^Above is a great site because it is a type of search engine to find educational games by subject, age or platform/console.

Convererting Strategies

Metric Units & Converting Between Them
HEY JEFF!!! Thanks for checking out my blog and commenting. As you requested, I have discovered this great site for students to use that helps them convert metric units: {kilo- hecto-  deka-  [unit]  deci-  centi-  milli-} using a sentence to remember the order in which the units convert, "King Henry Doesn't [Usually] Drink Chocolate Milk" and strategies to jump around to convert to each unit.

When looking to discover additional internet tools and resources for students and teachers to use to assist with SI metric conversions, I came across this great website composed of "Metric Mania Lesson Plans." I clicked on a few links and noted that some were cooler and more useful than others. I did find this AMAZINGLY ENGAGING website, called THINK METRIC.
Just by opening up the link and watching the intro, I was immediately engaged to find out more that the site has to offer. I'm an adult and I was excited to see what the site was all about, so just imagine how students will feel.

The best way to see what the site has to offer is to play around on the site and click on random buttons to discover the greatness of the site!!

Math Playground!!! "Play with Numbers & Give Your Brain a Workout"

This site is awesome! Math Playground is an "action-packed" site for Elementary & Middle School students. They can practice their math skills and have fun doing it using the activities and tools on this site. Did I mention this site is awesome?!!?!
Math Playground breaks down Math skills according to individual grade levels which I personally prefer. There are Math Games, Word Puzzles, Logic Puzzles & even Math Videos that can be used as a great teaching tool in any part of a lesson- beginning, middle or end. Math Playground provides, Thinking Blocks, Computation, Flashcards, Math Worksheets & Manipulatives (all great resources for students to grasp the concepts, skills and to learn to apply them).
Another great reason why I like this site, is because as a teacher, you can generate your own Math worksheets and print a master copy to distribute to your class. You can create worksheets specifically geared towards the needs of your students. So again, let me just say...THIS SITE IS AWESOME!!!!

I hyperlinked the site throughout my comment above. However, here is the link to the site once again... http://www.mathplayground.com/index.html. ENJOY!!

Here's a thought! "Are Tweets Copyrighted?" As an educator and an ethical person, Fair Use & Copyright Laws are important to know and understand. This site offers great understanding and insight to answer this question.
